📖Doctor's Guide — Bloating: Causes, Foods & Treatment
↓Bloating Meaning — What Is Bloating?
Bloating meaning: a sensation of fullness, tightness, or visible swelling of the abdomen, caused by excess gas or fluid in the digestive tract. Bloating meaning in Hindi: पेट फूलना (pet phoolna) — literally "stomach swelling." It is one of the most common digestive complaints in India, affecting an estimated 1 in 3 adults regularly. Bloating is not a disease — it is a symptom of an underlying digestive dysfunction that can almost always be identified and treated.
Why Does the Stomach Bloat After Eating?
The stomach bloats after eating when food is not being digested or absorbed efficiently, and instead ferments in the gut. The most common causes of chronic bloating and gastric problems in India:
- SIBO (Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth) — bacteria in the small intestine ferment carbohydrates before absorption, producing hydrogen and methane gas. Bloating that peaks 1–2 hours after eating strongly suggests SIBO.
- Lactose intolerance — very common in Indians; even small amounts of milk cause significant fermentation and gas
- H. pylori infection — disrupts stomach acid and enzyme production, causing food to sit and ferment
- Low digestive enzyme production — especially common after age 35, antibiotic use, or chronic stress
- Eating too fast — swallowing air with food adds directly to bloating
How to Stop Bloating — Immediate and Long-Term
How to stop bloating depends on the cause — but these approaches help most people:
- Fennel seeds (saunf) after meals — the most effective traditional carminative; reduces gas and intestinal spasm within 15–20 minutes
- Jeera (cumin) water — stimulates digestive enzymes, reduces fermentation
- Walk for 10 minutes after meals — stimulates gut motility and gas passage
- Avoid carbonated drinks — introduce gas directly into the gut
- Reduce onion, garlic, and beans — highest fermentation foods for most people
- Eat slowly, chew thoroughly — reduces air swallowing and improves enzyme contact with food
Bloating and Gastric Problems — When to Investigate
Bloating combined with unintended weight loss, blood in stool, persistent vomiting, or new onset after age 50 requires investigation to rule out IBD, coeliac disease, or colorectal cancer. However, bloating with these alarm features is uncommon. In the vast majority of cases, chronic bloating in India is caused by H. pylori, SIBO, dysbiosis, or food intolerance — all of which are diagnosable and treatable.
The AYUSH Approach to Chronic Bloating
Ayurveda classifies chronic bloating as Adhmana (distension from gas) or Anaha (obstruction of gas movement), both caused by impaired digestive fire (Agni). The core treatment is restoring Agni with digestive stimulants — Hingwashtak churna (asafoetida-based, the most effective classical remedy for gas) and Trikatu — alongside identifying and removing the specific cause. At Thavira, we always test for SIBO and H. pylori before starting a bloating protocol, because treating the wrong cause wastes months.
