ℹ️About Fatty Liver
↓

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the accumulation of excess fat in liver cells in the absence of significant alcohol use. It ranges from simple steatosis to the more serious NASH and is closely linked to insulin resistance, obesity, gut dysbiosis, and increased intestinal permeability via the gut-liver axis. Current medical management focuses on weight loss and metabolic risk factors, but there is no approved drug for NAFLD, and lifestyle advice alone rarely achieves sufficient sustained change without structured support and accountability. A root-cause AYUSH approach targets the gut-liver axis directly: repairing intestinal permeability, restoring healthy microbiome composition to reduce hepatic fat influx, using hepatoprotective herbs, and implementing a structured dietary protocol to reverse early NAFLD.

Can Fatty Liver Be Reversed?

Yes — fatty liver (NAFLD: Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease) is one of the most reversible chronic conditions when caught before significant fibrosis develops. Grade 1 and Grade 2 fatty liver can be fully reversed in 12–20 weeks with the right combination of dietary change, gut healing, and herbal hepatoprotective support. The liver is the only organ capable of complete regeneration — but only if intervention starts before fibrosis (Grade 3+) sets in.

The most important first step is an ultrasound abdomen to grade the disease, and liver function tests (SGPT/SGOT) to assess current inflammation level.

Why Weight Loss Alone Doesn't Reverse Fatty Liver

Weight loss reduces liver fat — but many non-obese people have fatty liver, and many obese patients who lose weight still have elevated liver enzymes. This is because fatty liver is driven by more than just body weight:

Can Fatty Liver Cause Fatigue, Digestive Problems, and Right-Side Pain?

Yes — and these are frequently the first symptoms that bring patients to investigation. Fatty liver causes bile production to drop, leading to fat malabsorption and loose stools after oily meals. Fatigue, brain fog, and right upper quadrant heaviness are classic fatty liver presentations attributed to "stress" or "lifestyle" for years before the liver connection is identified.

The AYUSH Approach to Fatty Liver Reversal

Three herbs stand out in Ayurvedic liver medicine with modern research backing: Bhumi amla (Phyllanthus niruri) — the most studied for hepatoprotection; Punarnava — reduces liver inflammation and supports regeneration; Kutki (Picrorhiza kurroa) — potent hepatoprotective used for both fatty liver and viral hepatitis. At Thavira, our fatty liver programme combines these herbs with an anti-insulin-resistance diet, gut microbiome restoration, and lifestyle modification — producing measurable ultrasound improvement in most patients within 12–16 weeks.
