Question

Doctor, every morning after I wake up, I go to the bathroom normally. But after I eat my breakfast, I again feel the urge to go to the bathroom and pass stools. This problem happens only in the morning and not after lunch or dinner. I want a regrowth of good gut bacteria. What can I do for it?

Doctor's Answer

What you are experiencing is a fairly normal reaction called gastro colic reflex. It is the strongest in the morning and tapers down by the evening. Regarding growing good gut bacteria - eat soluble fibre, avoid too much sugar and preservatives, avoid sugar-free products as they damage the bacterial growth. And take plenty of probiotics like buttermilk, curd, kefir, sourdough, etc. You can also take OTC probiotics on a daily basis.

The gastrocolic reflex being strongest in the morning is entirely normal — the challenge is when it's accompanied by urgency, loose stools, or pain, which indicates gut sensitivity rather than healthy bowel function. Supporting the gut bacteria through the right probiotic foods and fibre creates more tolerance over time.

In Ayurvedic and naturopathic medicine, the gut isn't just a digestive organ — it's the foundation of your immunity, your hormones, your mental health, and your energy. When it's out of balance, everything else follows. When it heals, everything else improves. At Thavira Health, our AYUSH-certified doctors treat the gut as the root — not the symptom. Our integrated protocol addresses every layer of gut function in sequence, until the healing is complete and permanent.
